So I haven't posted in 6 months. I am effectively saying goodbye to the blog. We had a good run. My life has finally slowed down enough that I don't have to keep everyone posted on the internet anymore. Hopefully, I stay in one place for awhile and no insanely major life changes take place. We're in Little Rock now. I teach special education at Hall High. David is teaching at Pulaski tech, and we are both constantly amazed at how great our life is. Cannon is such a wonderful, beautiful addition to our lives. He makes us both so happy. I love you all, and commend you for sticking with the blog for this long. Thanks for the love! Sayonara blog.

Sorry for the delay on the birth post. You would think having a baby that pretty much sleeps all of the time would be an excuse enough to write on the old blog, but unfortunately, it's an excuse to pack, clean, do my umpteenth load of laundry, or sleep. Little guy has finally passed out for the moment, so here goes the abbreviated version.

We went to the hospital at 12:30 am on Friday, July 30th. My contractions were mild most of the night, and I got a little bit of sleep. At 9:00 am my doctor came in and broke my water and my contractions got a lot stronger. After about an hour I asked for an epidural, which hurt like hell going in but turned my 9-pain-scale contractions into zilch pain scale. Little did I know I would have about 12 more hours of labor to go. I was dilating uber-slow but finally, at about 6:30 p.m., I was a ten and could start pushing. Every time I would push everyone would yell "good good, great, perfect," but after an hour, he was still in the exact same place. Everyone could see his head, but he was still pretty far up there. Cannon was facing "sunny-side up" which means his head wasn't in a good position to be pushed through my pelvis. No amount of turning or twisting was getting him to move. Every time I laid on anything besides my back, his little heart rate would drop too low. My doctor told me to keep pushing for awhile longer and well see where we got. An hour later, Cannon was still in the exact same position. I was devastated and tired. I asked her if there was anyway we could just pull him out, since we could see him. She told me that it could hurt him, because he was still so far up, and that (prepare yourself) she would pretty much be giving me a vaginal cesarean and that it was going to "tear my bottom up." After explaining this she told me I could keep pushing or we could do a cesarean and it was up to me. After hearing the vaginal cesarean comment, I was scared, but done. I told her I wanted the c-section, that I was ready for him to get out. I was upset about it, but there is a certain point where you just want to be finished and see that little baby. The anesthesiologist came in to give me a spinal block, and teach me the true meaning of a 10 on the pain scale. I ended up instantly getting what is called a spinal headache. I can definitely say this is the worst pain I have ever felt in my entire life. I was hysterical and sobbing and can't even remember much of the surgery except for David telling me to breath and me telling him I didn't want to EVER do this again (much to the protest of everyone in the room). My doctor also kept telling me that as soon as the baby was out, she was going to give me "the best margarita I've ever had in an IV." Cannon came out at 8:45 p.m. with extensive tugging and in went the margarita. He weighed 8 lbs 1 oz and was 20.5 in. long. After about 5 minutes I felt a lot better and could get a look at my little guy. His apgar score was a 9, but he was kind beat up from getting stuck in my pelvis. He had a black eye, fat lip, and bruised forehead. My doctor told me I made the right decision, that he was NOT coming out. David went with Cannon and I got wheeled off to recovery where I had a bad case of the shakes that lasted well into the night. At about 11 pm I got to go to the mother/baby room and nurse and hold him. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, but truly truly worth it.
It's been twelve days and Cannon is the sweetest, most adorable kid a mom could ask for. He eats ferociously every 2-3 hours but sleeps like a log. I think he has my nose and the rest is all his daddy. I honestly have never been so happy.
As most of you know, things have never been so crazy in the Carpenter household. David found out he got a full time visual arts teaching position at Pulaski Tech on July 28th and Cannon was born on the 30th. David started work on Monday and Melinda has been staying with me and helping me take care of the baby and recover from surgery. My mom comes down on Sunday and I head up to Little Rock on the 22nd or 23rd. We are staying with David's parents for a few months and trying to buy a house. I'm going to miss everyone here, but can't wait to finally be in Arkansas again. Things could not have worked out better for us. We are so blessed.

A few weeks ago we went to Little Rock for a wonderful baby shower thrown by Elizabeth, Katie and Christy. Here are some pictures. I know there aren't very many of me, but I feel like a whale in every picture. I've only got a few weeks until little guy makes an appearance, but things are getting incredibly uncomfortable. I can't wait. Either I'm carrying him really high, or he's one tall baby cause I get kicked in the ribs a lot. I'll be sure and let you know if he decides to make an early appearance. I left work early today. The air conditioner went out and my Braxton Hicks contractions were driving me crazy. I felt so miserable I decided to leave. I just need to remember that it will all be worth it in the end.
David is still looking for a "real" job. He's been busy with several art openings and has got a lot of press. Check out some of the links below.

belated updates

Hey everyone,

The last few weeks have been so busy both David and I have barely had time to sleep, more or less blog post, so here it is. Baby Carpenter is still doing well. I'm officially 10 weeks away from my due date and HUGE! We go for our (probably last) ultrasound tomorrow to see if his little cyst is gone. The doctor assures us that if it still isn't, it'll be okay. We went to childbirth class this weekend and it was pretty intense. After much consideration and debate, I've decided to go ahead and have an epidural. I admire everyone who doesn't, but it's a personal choice and one that apparently 98% of patients and Woman's hospital in Baton Rouge choose. I also have a feeling this little (big?) guy is coming early as I appear to be nine months pregnant, get Braxton Hicks at least 4 times a day, and have a family history of early babies. So let's cross our fingers for 8 weeks, shall we.
David is officially done with his MFA thesis. It was a roaring success. I'm really proud of him (and us). Three years is a long time to be in school full time, but it's paid off. He is currently applying for jobs in the Baton Rouge area, and a couple look promising.

As many of you know, we are developing a long term plan to eventually move back to Little Rock. With the baby due in August and my health insurance and maternity benefits, moving this year isn't really an option. Depending on a lot of factors we will be moving as early as December and as late as May/June. This time next year, we should at least be packed and ready to go back home. We've been here awhile and really want to be closer to family.

My students finished school on Thursday, but I"m still at work for most of this week. In Louisiana, to go on past the 4th grade, you have to pass a state test called the Leap. The scores range from unsatisfactory, approaching basic, basic, mastery and advanced. You have to have at least an approaching basic and a basic in math and ELA to pass. Last year I had a self-contained special education student pass with basic ELA and basic Math. This year I had a self-contained special education student pass with Mastery ELA, Basic Math (and basic science and social studies I might add). Also, many of my students received approaching basic on the test. I couldn't be prouder of my kids. Most of them come to me at least 3 grade levels below, and for them to do so well is almost unheard of. There are days where I feel like I"m not sure if I'm making a difference, but I can legitimately say I feel proud of myself as well.

Next weekend we are packing up the truck with David's art work because he has a show in Little rock the first week of June. We are also spending memorial day weekend in Little Rock and attending a baby shower hosted by Katie, Elizabeth and Christy. I can't wait. Here are some pictures of the last few weeks.

We went to the doctor again on Monday and Cannon still has one little cyst, but everything else looks great. The doctor is not at all concerned. They are going to check again in a month. In 11 days I'll be in my 3rd trimester. Honestly, I'm already ready for him to make an appearance. My trips to the restroom are pretty much hourly and my appetite is out of control. Besides all of that, I'm doing really well. David's thesis show reception is May 15th from 6-8 pm. He is working constantly, and we are both ready for it to be finished. I start summer school on June 1st and we head to Little Rock on May 28th for Memorial Day. Anything else comes up, I'll keep you posted. The latest ultrasound pictures are uber-close ups. She turned the 3-D on for a second and he definitely has the Devor nose! He has his little fists up in this picture, like he's going to knock you out.

Baby Cannon is growing bigger everyday. Here are pictures of his little feet and cute face (except for that last skeletor pic). I swear I can already see a Devor nose on that kid.

We went to the doctor on Friday and everything looks good except for one little thing. He has these 2 tiny cysts on his brain called choroid plexus cysts. They are found in about 1 out of every 100 second and third trimester ultrasounds and most doctors agree, found alone, with no other problems, usually mean nothing. Our doctor told us NOT to worry. She is going to check him out again, from head to toe in 4 weeks. I've done a lot of research. Choroid plexus cysts can be an indicator of a usually fatal condition called trisomy 18 and sometimes downs syndrome, but my chances are still low, 1 in 371, which is not very likely. Basically we have a .0026% chance of having a baby with a chromosome problem. I guess the semi-nerve-racking part is that my chances of having a baby with trisomy 18 before the cysts were 1 in 3000. I'm going to take the doctor's advice and not worry (which means staying off the internet).

I broke down and bought a plane ticket to Siloam for Monday for spring break. I can't wait. I haven't been home since Christmas. This will probably be the last trip to Arkansas for awhile seeing as my belly is constantly growing and my back can't seem to handle the car ride.

David is crazy-busy with his thesis show. He has 6 weeks to get everything done including his paper. I'll keep you posted on how things go.

Belated Baby Blog

I know I said I would update every Sunday, but I got to caught up with work. School is super busy right now with the end of the 9 weeks, IEP-bonanza, summer school determination etc. David has also been burning the midnight oil on his thesis show. My sister delivered her beautiful baby girl Joanna Namoi on the 4th. She's a cutie with a Devor nose. Picture attached. Carpenter Baby news: official baby name Cannon Carpenter. Middle name is still up for grabs. My belly is HUGE, but if one more person asks if I'm having twins I will cry. (it doesn't take much though, I literally saw a picture of a puppy and cried, boo). I can feel him move every now and then, but it still just feels like popcorn popping. I'm still waiting for that Garrett Hartley kick. (Saints reference) From the looks of the sonogram it shouldn't be long. He's a busy body and a heavyweight.

Growth Spurt

We went to the doctor and Thursday and, as most of you know, we discovered we are having a boy. We are both really excited. He moves around constantly, and I can feel it ever so often. Not only is it a boy, but it's a very big boy. At my sonogram I was supposed to be 16 weeks and 2 days, but the baby is measuring 18 weeks. Either he's really big or my due date is off (I'm betting the latter). He's been measuring big since 9 weeks, and that is supposed to be very accurate. Next time we go to the doctor, on the 26th, they will do a full body scan of the baby and they may change my due date. Here is a picture of the baby, see through spine and all. I will not post a picture of the It's a boy, naked baby on a glass table from below shot. I am trying to avoid years of humiliation. Let's just say, it's obvious it's a boy.

We switched doctors, and I'm very happy with our choice. Our new doctor's office is much more organized and understanding. They even had us actually meet with the insurance department who informed me (and showed me) that we have a 25 dollar copay for pregnancy and delivery. At the last place, they told me I had a 300 dollar deductible for them, a 300 dollar deductible for the hospital, and I owed them 10% of everything else they did. I told them I thought I had a 25 dollar copay and they told me I was wrong, making me cry on two separate occasions. When I called Blue Cross after the new doctor, they told me not only did I only owe 25, but that they had already paid the old doctors office all of the money they also took from me. I had to leave a stern message on the voicemail and they now are sending me a refund check for 375 dollars. Hooray for getting back money.
I applied to teach summer school for the month of June. It's good money, and I might be able to save up enough to take off 12 weeks total. I have a feeling it's going to be a struggle to get me back at work. One of my students hurled adult scissors across the room yesterday. I know, I know, barrels of fun.

I was finally starting to feel better this week until this morning. Rocky let loose one of his horrendous farts which sent me reeling to the bathroom. Boo morning sickness, please go away. Ditto to all the other horrible pregnancy symptoms that continue to plague me. Honestly, I can't wait until this baby is here. I don't care how much he gets up in the night or how much he cries or needs changed, he will still be precious and wonderful and out of my body, which sounds absolutely fabulous to me.

I've decided that since we're preggers I should probably post some more stuff. I'm going to try and make a new post every Sunday, so keep your eyes open. You can watch the amazing growing belly (this week in David's safety glasses). Since my last post we've had snow, school cancellations and MARDI GRAS! I only had to go to work 3 days this week. We headed down to New Orleans, had a blast at Spanish Town and David set up his art show in Thibodaux. Here are pictures from our recent excursions.

On a baby note, we might find out the sex tomorrow. I have a doctors appointment with a new doctor and I'm not sure what that will entail, but I'll be 17 weeks on Tuesday, so maybe we'll find out. If not, we should know by Michael/Anna and Katie/Holt's weddings. Arkansas, here we come. I'm missin' my homies. We tried to register for some stuff last week for fun, and left a little overwhelmed. How many kinds of bottles can they make? This is one situation where you have nothing you need, you have no idea what you're doing and the consumer world is trying to make you buy things like drying racks for bottles that you have no idea if you need or not. It's exhausting. I keep telling myself that people used to have babies in caves, so no matter what we get, it'll be better than that.

Things have been going pretty smoothly in the Carpenter household. I want to post, but I am honestly more tired than I have ever been in my whole life. I am also sporting a decent baby bump. Everyone keeps saying, "Wow, you're only 12 weeks!" I have to wear maternity clothes or stretchy pants just to make it through the day. Last time I went to the doctor the baby was going absolutely crazy. We couldn't even get a good picture it was moving around so much. I saw it do about 10 somersaults in 2 minutes. See above pictures. Two of my very sweet work friends, Eva and Sara, are throwing me a baby shower in May. I really can't wait for the baby to get here. If you know me at all you know I can't stand surprises and I'm not known for my patience. I am so anxious to get started, to know what it is, go shopping, have the nursery ready, and start saving it's college fund. I like to be prepared.

Mardi Gras is coming up and we're headed to New Orleans next weekend for the first big parade. If anyone wants to come and crash at our house for the big party come on down. I'm a fail proof designated driver ;). David's been cranking out work in the studio. Pretty much all we do is come home, eat whatever is in the kitchen and pass out from exhaustion. His show is going to be really amazing though. I'm really impressed with his work this semester. I promise, if anything happens, I'll let you know. Hey everyone,

I just realized that it has been a month and a half since I wrote on my blog, and I apologize. I had to start an anonymous teacher blog just to give me something to post about because my life is work, well up until last week. David and I are going to have a baby on/around August 10th. We're excited, but also freaked out. We weren't trying to have a baby, but it decided to come on anyway. I've been super sickly for the last week. So far being pregnant means throwing up, hating food, being crazy bloated, being tired, peeing all the time, and throwing up more. Everything I've read says this is a good sign, but it's definitely not enjoyable. I don't care as long as it's healthy. I'll keep you posted on this, I promise.
Last night David was in the wearable art show "Uncommon Thread." He did absolutely amazing. He had to wear this crazy bull head he made and stand up on gun stilts ( he also made). The crowd went totally crazy. He should have won, but didn't. I'm terribly proud of him. I didn't get great pictures, because If I didn't sit down, I would have gotten sick. I saw some great pictures I will post once the other people post them on facebook.

Also in the past month we got a snow day! This is the first time in Baton Rouge history it has snowed 2 years in a row. I guess we're just lucky like that. We also had a bad sweater christmas party that was a blast.

I have one week left of school and then off to Arkansas to sleep, rest, and open presents!

Cabin and Aquarium

Here are some pictures of our cabin and the Aquarium in Gatlinburg. Click here to see the swanky cabin. I would highly recommend this place. The view was beautiful, the accommodations were top notch, it's 10 miles from the craziness of Gatlinburg (ie. pancake house, airbrush place, fudge shop, mini golf, another pancake house, etc.) and it was pet friendly so we got to bring Rocky and Boomer. We've had a blast eating tenessee cookin', white water rafting, mini golfing and playing rummikub. Tomorrow we're headed to Baton Rouge, a little sad. It has been so great to spend time with our families. I'm headed back to Little Rock about July 22nd or 23rd and then to both family reunions before school starts. I had a dream/nightmare last night that school started, and none of my kids showed up. I had to move my classroom three time and Brad Pitt was the librarian. Interpret that...

David and I got back from Ireland safe and sound, hung with the Carpenter clan and headed straight to Siloam Springs, and then promptly to Silver Dollar City in Branson. It was amazingly awesome. We all got one of those old timey tin-type pictures made; the kids were adorable, and I got to ride all of the roller coasters with my dad. Also, my dad totally screamed "I loooooove thiiiiiis!" on Wildfire when it went upside down. It was pretty spectacular, until I got off of it the second time and wanted to throw up. It was wonderful to be with the whole family, and to visit a place that reminds me so much of my childhood. I haven't been there in probably 15 years. Here are some pictures!

P.S. We just got to the Smoky Mountains a few hours ago with David's folks. I know, quit hating on us for our ridiculous summer-vacation-amazingness.

We've been having a wonderful time. Allison's mom, Norah, is the sweetest host we could ask for. She keeps feeding us and checking on everything. Like a complete dope, I've lost my passport. It must have fallen out of our carryon on the last plane, but the airline and the airport haven't found it. I get to spend the day in Dublin on Tuesday getting a new one. It's not so bad; I needed to change my name on it anyway. Galway is really nice. David's been busy collecting materials for the exhibition, and I've been helping so far. Today I'm going to spend the day in the cute little shops in the city. The Aran Islands are close, so we're going to take a trip out there soon. The weather is absolutely perfect. It's about 60-70 degrees with a cool breeze. Here are some pictures for your enjoyment.

Top of the mornin' to ya

We made it. Allison's family is fabulous for putting all of us up. We're one big happy family. Kit, Cody, Allison, her sister, Lydia, David and I are all staying at her house. It's really lovely. The weather has been perfect. So far we've walked around Galway, eaten and slept. We've also hit up the Irish pubs. We woke up at 12:30 Irish time and 6:30 home time. I'll post pictures and stuff later.

I am thoroughly enjoying my summer. So far it's been a blur of barbeques, sleeping in, catching up on all those things I always intend to do but never get around to and getting ready for Ireland. I have 5 days left of school! I honestly cannot believe I made it. Hopefully next year is easier, more effective and less crazy. Pictured above and my kids science fair projects. We totally should have won. I was very, very proud of them. 1 out of my 5 kids went up at least one grade level in math and reading, and 3 went up 2 grade levels! What's exciting is that I'll probably have most of them next year, so we can build on that progress.
Also pictured above is crime scene photos from a carpet vandalism that occurred at approximately 1 am last night. A half consumed G2 ink pen is the suspected weapon and the suspect is a 6 year old terrier mix. He was found with blue paws and was so covered in ink that we had to hose him down. Pretty incriminating evidence if I say so myself.

I had a great time at home. My mom and I took Ashur and Jed to the aquarium outside of Tulsa. It was actually really fun. I also ate a lot of good food and celebrated an early birthday with my folks. I have 20 school days left before Summer 2009! As you probably know, David and I are headed to the Emerald Isle from June 6th through the 24th. I absolutely cannot wait. We are also probably coming to a venue near you sometime this summer. So far this year I have adequately mastered being a special education teacher, grown a flower garden, and finally taught Rocky how to walk on a leash (I AM THE ALPHA DOG). David was successfully passed on to Thesis. Next year he will spend most of his time creating a large array of work for a big show sometime in April or May of next year. Here is his latest piece. He's calling it family tree right now, but he will probably change it. Also, here are tons of pictures of my family in Siloam.

P.S. As many of you probably remember, my aunt Polly went missing when I was in Nepal in 2007. This week we learned, the police arrested her daughter in her murder, and they found her remains. My family is upset, but relieved to know what finally happened to her. Keep them in your thoughts.

The big Louisiana LEAP test is finally over. In May we'll find out if all the tutoring, and all of the hard core teaching paid off. To celebrate the end of the tests, we had a big kickball tourney. Coach let everyone kick (no matter how many outs we got). The regular third grade class got to all kick twice and my tiny class got to kick once. Of course, we lost. Booo for fixed sporting events. I got my hair done today. I went super blonde. It's pretty cute. I head home tomorrow. I haven't been to Siloam since Christmas. It'll be good to see everyone. A big late congrats to Brooke and Trevor who just welcomed little Sadie into this world. She is gorgeous. Since I can't post pictures of my kids, here are some pictures of my fabulouso room displays. I know, it's been two months. I am a bad, bad blogger. This week has been LEAP testing and I know my kids would rock the test if they would just stop acting out throughout the entire test. No, you are not allowed to get up and scream, break pencils, sing songs (especially songs where you spell out words) or beat on the desk as hard as you can. On Thursday, a really bad thunderstorm came through Baton Rouge. I was in the cafeteria with the kids when the power went out. Of course, everyone screamed, and we tried to corral the kids and get them quiet. One of the teachers at my school raised her arms in the air and began shouting "CHILDREN, IT IS NOT THE THUNDER THAT WILL KILL YOU, IT IS THE LIGHTNING. CHILDREN, LIGHTNING WILL KILL YOU!" I had to tell the crying first graders that she was just being silly. It is the most hilarious thing that has happened in a long time. David and I decided on a whim to come to Little Rock for the weekend. We've enjoyed lots of eating, lots of seeing friends and family, and lots of catching up on sleep. Even though we were only home for 48 hours, it's been pretty sweet. We'll be back in the BR tonight. Next week is Spring break!

Mardi Gras.....keep it comin'

It's started. Massive amounts of king cake covered in delicious frosting, crawfish everything, beads beads beads, party party party. Yes that's right. It is the time of year in Louisiana that is so much more dangerous for your figure than Christmas... it's Mardi Gras time. To kick it off I went to an amazing party at my friend Sara's house. I danced the single ladies dance in stilettos if it is any indication of the amount of fun I had. Christy, E-Beth and Jeremy are coming down to celebrate the weekend before. Another perk of Louisiana, I get off two full days for Mardi Gras. Also, we might go to this festival where people ride horses and beg for chickens, which they then chase.... amazing.

At the dog park on Thursday, Boomer was attacked by another dog. His face was uber-swollen, but the vet took good care of him. Here's a sad pic.

My kids are having a rough time this semester. I do what I can, but the ugly truth is that kids, in general, are mean. If I catch another student calling one of my student's stupid, dumb, retarded or otherwise, that student better run because there will be hell to pay. Unfortunately, I don't always catch them. In a last effort to encourage my kids despite teasing I have posted in my class the following "most horrible picture ever" of a very awkward, tall, frizzy haired, 9 year-old Mrs. Carpenter surrounded by her remarkably small friends. This says, I promise, life will get better when you get a little older, or if anything, at least you weren't as weird looking as Mrs. Carpenter.

I never post. I know I never post. I attribute this to having been in one place for over a year and having no plans of leaving the country. I guess you could say I've "settled down" which is infinitely less exciting to other people than to me. I'm having a ball being married, sleeping late, playing video games, teaching, starting a new garden, playing with my dogs, I just don't think anyone else is very interested in this blissful monotony. I solemnly swear to post when anything out of the ordinary happens. For instance, I went to an awesome brunch at one of my teacher friend's houses. David wanted to know if we should dress up. We got there and about 15 people were in their pajamas, mostly Teach for America teachers and it was amazing. I loved AmeriCorps, but I think maybe TFA is the way to go. You get a salary, you get to live with other cool people; you get 2 years of an education award; and most of you are over the age of 22.
On Tuesday we are having a "The long wait second line funeral for the bush administration" party. In New Orleans, brass bands are often a part of important social events, particularly "jazz funerals". The brass band will play and the "First line" will be the mourners and the "second line" will be people who are attracted to the music. Second lining is "uninhibited dancing at processions." David and our friend Katrina made a banner that says "mission accomplished" We are going to march down the street with the boom box. Then we are having an Inauguration party at the house. I'll definitely post pictures.

This Christmas was a super blast. Elizabeth and Jeremy's wedding was perfect. Everyone had a great time. After that we spent a week at David's folks and then a week at mine. We got a digital video camera and a wii fit! Now I can lose weight while playing video games and videotape it at the same time. Here are some pictures from a great Christmas vacation. Worst Blogger Ever

Okay, it's official. I am the worst blogger out there. I went to Elizabeth's Bachelorette party a couple of weeks ago and had a fabulous time. It was a much needed break from the absolute chaos of my classroom the last few weeks. I can't go into detail but it did involve broken noses, broken hearts, lots of crying, calls to authorities and so on. I've been totally exhausted. Thanksgiving was amazing. We went to my parent's and David's parents in 4 days. We both forgot our cameras, so I don't have any pictures, but David playing on the trampoline with my nephews was adorable. Jed turned 3 and Ashur turned 7. Christy and David and I took them to see Bolt. That's about it for updates. I'm coming home again soon and can't wait for Elizabeth and Jeremy's wedding. Christmas is also a plus. My job is really wearing on me. I need that burst of home to rest and gain the strength to tackle 5 more months doing whatever it is I've been doing. Love you all. Sorry for the lax blogging. I promise, you're not missing much. :)

We spent Halloween at the opening of the graduate show and the famous Carlotta Street Halloween Party. We had a great time. At the show we were the cast of clue, and then for the party we were Master Shake and Frylock. I think a million people took pictures of us, so look for that on various facebooks around Baton Rouge. We had a great time.

Fall Fest

This weekend we went to the #1 haunted attraction in the United States, the 13th gate Haunted House. I'm not going to post any pictures from their website, but here's the link, if you're brave enough http://www.midnightproduction.com/the13thgate.htm I was terrified. I seriously spent 3/4 of it with my eyes closed. Also I got a horrible tension headache from the whole thing. We went through a crazy hospital, a sewer (with clowns), a Texas Chain-saw Massacre thing, a mummy thing, a pirates of the Caribbean thing, a voodoo thing, a cemetery, a zombie thing, a snake and spider thing, and some other stuff I don't remember because I had my eyes closed. I almost cried, but it was totally worth it. No scary movie has ever given me a headache.

This weekend we also revisited the Angola Prison Rodeo, which was much more fun the second time around. I think the prisoners had practiced this time because they weren't half bad.

Boomer had surgery yesterday. He is absolutely the saddest thing ever, but his hernia is gone. I am also out the equivalent of roughly a month's rent, but I love my dog so it's okay.

Tomorrow is the Fall festival at my school. It is going to be super fun. Also, it's nice to not be teaching for 2 hours tomorrow. One of my students and I are in a battle of wills. He tells me I don't know about 100 times while I say "The short sound for a is aaaa, say aaaa" I keep trying to tell him that you can't say "I don't know" when I tell you to do something, only when I ask. All I know is, I'm the most stubborn person I know, and that includes you, Buster. I will win and you will learn something, so just keep on wasting your energy.

My mom and Christy came down this weekend. We celebrated mostly by playing rock band (thanks for the early Christmas present Mom and Dad) and making Christy's best ever, super secret Halloween costume. I promised I would not post pictures. We had an awesome time.

Also, on Sunday, I got to carve pumpkins with the printmakers. Mine is 4 ghosts in a choral group. Weird, but entertaining.

I was surprised today to learn that I was accepted into the adopt a teacher program I applied for a few months ago. I received a $450.00 gift card to Schoolaids, our school supply store. A big, huge, amazing thank you to the exchange club. My kids are excited about all of the stuff for our classroom. I'll take a picture of everything I got with the gift card. By the way, if you've never been to a school store, and you're a dork like me, you should definitely go. It's the most fun store ever!

P.S. a HUGE thank you to my mom, who, so far, has single handedly supplied virtually every cool thing I have in my classroom right now. The kids are obsessed with those wooden dinosaur bones and the leggos. You're awesome!

Haircut

I chopped all of my hair off. I was going for a Katie Holmes thing. The kids at school hate it, but it's easy to fix. Other than that, I've been too busy to sleep, but not too busy to eat cake for dinner. David is also as busy. I wish I had something awesome to say, but I'm about to fall asleep.....at 8:30pm.

Sorry I've been out for so long. My life has been taken over with IEPs and meetings and sinus infections. I went to the doctor yesterday and got a big ol' shot that made me feel well enough to come to work today. I actually slept 16 hours on Friday night. I know, impressive. Besides work and school, nothing has been happening in Baton Rouge. I did make some amazing muffins the other day though. I am finally getting a handle on this whole teaching thing. I started this plan where I give 10 Scotlandville bucks on Mondays, and I take away a buck for a bad choice, and I give a buck when you make a good choice. It is kinda like magic. They're behavior has been 100 times better.

I have officially watched every episode of The Wire, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Lost. P.S. If you haven't watched the Wire it is the greatest television show ever made; you have to watch it!

Okay, so it's not cows blowing through the sky, but it was scary. On the fence video, you just have to watch closely. In the first 10 seconds it moves pretty good. Now imagine it doing that for 2 hours.

We made it out alive, a little terrified, but alive. At first I was like, this isn't so bad, it's like a baby thunderstorm in Arkansas. I played some Dominoes, started eating poptarts way too early, and looked out the window. At about 12:00 the power began flickering on and off every couple of minutes. David and I went out to look at an electrical pole that was swaying dangerously close to our house when we heard this surge of electricity reverberate and green light shot out of the transformer. That was the end of the power.

David went outside to check on the gate because it was banging back and forth. He came back shouting something about the fence and my car. I shouted back "just tie it with a ratchet strap." He yelled " No! not the gate, the whole fence." I looked out and saw the enormous sheet metal privacy fence shifting back and forth about 4 feet from my car. I ran outside in the rain and grabbed my keys, David opened the gate and Ryan (our friend from New Orleans) shouts, "GO GO GO GO!" The back of our fence flies up in the air and slams down on the ground. I'm screaming and simultaneously burning rubber on our gravel driveway to get out of the fence. After this terrifying adventure, we go back in the house and wait for the other side of the fence to fly at the house and chop the roof off. Fortunately this never happened, but we need to pour concrete all around the fence because the wind and rain washed away most of the holes it's buried in.

Inside our house it didn't seem too bad outside. When it finally calmed down, we went out in the street and saw a power line snapped in two down the block, another one flat across the road, a tree down across the street that took the back end of the roof off and half a dozen trees with jagged, split limbs and piles of branches and debris around them.

The radio said it was the worst hurricane to hit Baton Rouge since Hurricane Betsy in 1965. Schools are definitely closed until Monday and about half of Baton Rouge won't get power for 4 weeks! We threw away everything in the fridge after Tuesday and by Wednesday it was so wet and muggy in our house that our soggy clothes and clogged up sink were beginning to sour. Just in case we are in that 4-weeks-without-power group, we decided to head to Little Rock and stay with David's parent's until Monday, get some sleep, put on dry clothes, and not eat poptarts. We just got in and we're about to go to bed. I'm totally exhausted from putting the fence back up with David this morning and cleaning up the yard.

I wanted to let you all know that we're safe, and we're very lucky. Our friend Jimmy's ceiling caved in, so he is going to stay with us for awhile. So many of the houses we saw on the way out of town have trees inside them, not just in the back yard. We can drive down our street; we can drink our water, and we have a place to go.

Hurricane Gustav Stephen Spielberg Boudanza

That's right, the hurricane is headed straight for Liziana this weekend. We have water, poptarts, several Stephen Spielberg movies (David has never seen Jaws, Close Encounters or Poltergiest!!!!!!!!!), batteries, car chargers, boudin, dominoes and a boombox. David doesn't have school Tuesday, and it's looking like I won't either. Ryan is staying with us because he recently moved to New Orleans. We are taping up the windows, lighting up the flashlights and candles and trying to turn it into a scary/fun/poptart filled/relaxing weekend. I've never been in a storm before that you could prepare for days in advance. Walmart was like the day before Christmas, if you wanted to get your kid a generator or bottled water. We are totally safe and if things get bad, we'll all hold the fort down in the bathroom. I'll keep you posted.

Teaching

This week was tough. I had to refer a child to social services because one of my kids is definitely experiencing neglect and possibly experiencing abuse. On Thursday when school let out, getting him to go home took 20 minutes and broke my heart in the process. On Friday one of my students told me he loved me in the morning and in the afternoon he hated me. Also one of my students kicked me because I wanted him to do his language worksheet. I called his guardian and she got so upset when she got to the school she began to have medical problems and we had to call an ambulance. Needless to say, on Friday I came home exhausted, had a good cry, and picked myself up again.

Despite all of this, I'm really happy this is where I ended up. This is where I need to be. A lot of people told me not to take this job because it was a rough school, but I think that's why I took it.

Teaching is a misunderstood profession. When you are a teacher, you're a nurse, a parent, an advocate, a judge, and a counselor. People are quick to blame the parents, but I know that's not it. Poverty is rampant and desperation causes people to loose sight, give up, or kill themselves trying. With the cost of food, energy and gasoline things that were already hard are getting dangerously worse.

My school has a health clinic on campus and is working on getting a dentist. My school understands that we have to tackle the whole problem. You can't teach a child that is hungry or a child with a toothache or a child whose relative has just been shot. Because of all of this, I'm proud to be a teacher in my school. I am also profoundly glad to have my Masters from the Clinton School. I know I could have taught without my Master's degree, but I also know that I would have had no idea how to fix any of the problems my 10 year olds deal with everyday.

Sorry Sorry Sorry. I've been way to busy to post. I really hope that in a few weeks this work from 6am to 10pm thing is going to end. I'm worn out. My school ended up hiring another teacher so now my class is 4 students. We had one kid get socially promoted so there are 8 total. I took the older kids, because I'm good with them. I've been planning and trying to get organized constantly. Last week was open house. I had to be at school until 8pm and none of my parents could come. I was even on the committee! Regardless, I think my classroom is finally in good shape and my kids are going to start getting somewhere now that we've settled in. Here are some pictures of a bulletin board David helped me make and my classroom. I really like my job, and I think I'm good at it. I just have this little issue where I have a tendency to work too hard. I'd write more, but I need to go to sleep. Our air conditioner broke last night, so it's been a hot weekend.

Last minute change

Okay, so Thursday I found out through a happenstance conversation that they never hired another self-contained teacher, and that I am the only one, leaving me with all grades and all 12 kids thus far. I also found out that almost all of the kids are 4-5th grade and are all boys. As most of you know, I was gung-ho ready for K-2. It's been a pretty big shock. Overnight I have to move from writing letters to writing essays and addition to geometry. Needless to say some of my Clifford decorations are a little kiddish since a lot of my kids may be teenagers. I'm taking the news surprisingly well though. I can use a lot of stuff that I couldn't with the little ones like interests surveys and, well anything with written word. Also, now I can read aloud fun books like Mania Magee and The Chronicles of Narnia. David helped me set my classroom up but it still needs a lot of work. For instance, I have about 12 kids and about 22 desks. This is a little annoying. Also I don't have a schedule, any of their individual education plans. I start school on Monday and the kids start on Thursday so wish me luck. I feel really unprepared now, and you know that makes me nervous :).

Busy Busy Bees

Sorry I haven't been posting. I've been really busy with a gagillion trainings, and I still haven't gotten into my classroom. Cross your fingers for this week because I start school on Monday. I'm actually pretty much terrified since my room hasn't been cleaned out, more or less set up, and I have no idea who my children are or what any of my school's policies or procedures are. I guess it's just one of those things that you have to jump in head first.

Since there really isn't anything I can do after 5pm until I get into my classroom, I've been watching Lost nonstop on the internet. It's gotten so bad we moved the computer into the bedroom so I can watch it back there and never have to move. I've obviously watched way too much, because last night I woke up yelling that Mr. Eko was in our room. If you know of any sleep studies, please give me their number. If I wake David up one more time I think he's going to sleep on the couch permanently.

In other news HOT! Yesterday was a record breaking 105 in B.R. and the heat index was expected to be 110 today. Of course, my dad and Ashur came to town and we decided to take him to the zoo, where the electricity was out, and it was broiling. The water fountains didn't even work. Despite it all, I had a really great time. We played Wii and ate cookies and went to the dog park and etc. They are on their way to Allybama to go look at the Battleship.

David is currently trying to convince me to go on a walk, but it's still 92 outside and the sun is down.

Also this weekend I painted a bookshelf, David reupholstered a bench and the sunflowers bloomed. Here are some pictures to brighten your day. The picture of that room full of stuff, that should be in my classroom by next week :).

I had a great time at home. It was really good to see my family. As soon as I got back though it was non stop training time. I've had reading training and DIBELS training every day this week. Next week is Special Education training and New teacher training. The next week is Special Ed training and other random trainings and then school starts. P.S. all of this training and I still don't know what I'm doing. Teaching is a lot more involved than I remember. David's been working non-stop as well (and watching lost when he's not) so we've both just kind of been coming home and immediately going to sleep. I wish I had more interesting news to report. 4th of July weekend

We had a ton of fun last weekend in Rock Town. I got to meet Brooks and Jessica's baby, Luke and Kat and Karl's baby, Nate. We went to David's fam for the 4th. I also bought a dress for the Spann wedding and had an overall fabulous time. On the way home though, we got a ticket for speeding. I guess it's kind of a miracle we haven't gotten one yet, and I know my new red car didn't help matters. Stupid, little Mississippi speed traps.

As soon as we got home, I was like, where's my economic stimulus check, and looked it up online. Turns out, even though I made 6,000 dollars, because 4000 was my AmeriCorps award (which they took taxes out of) I don't get the freakin' check. Lying government you know whats.

David got a new job this week sanding counter tops. He likes it, and now he has to get up early too.

Tomorrow night is the closing ceremony for the TeachBR Summer Institute. I am giving a speech to represent everything that we learned this summer. Wish me luck. I'm leavin' on a jet plane for Siloam Springs on Friday. I'm sure I'll have oodles of adorable little kid pictures to post when I get home.

Arts and Crafts

My House is quickly becoming an arts and crafts H E double hockey sticks. I have been making stuff for my classroom non stop. Here are some of my favorites. I have a dog theme, if you didn't guess. I've bought 2 Clifford posters, but here's the handmade stuff. I am particuarly proud of my literacy center rotation chart. The kids will be in four groups, Scotties, Bulldogs, Dalmatians and Bassets. I am admittedly a total dork. Here are pictures of my new car which I LOOOOOVE! I know I should be a little nostalgic about the Sunfire, but I'm not. This car rocks. I think David and I are headed to Little Rock this weekend to break it in. It was a spur of the moment decision.

That's right, bye bye Pontiac Sunfire. I hope you and I never cross paths again. Right now you are sitting at the Honda dealership while I get to borrow a Honda Civic until my fuel efficient, cherry red, brand spankin' new Honda Fit Sport arrives on Monday. You steered me wrong too many times Sunfire. The paneling kept falling in my lap when I drove. I had to stuff tissues in the walls so you wouldn't rattle on the way to Little Rock. You're check engine light NEVER goes off and lately, you haven't even been able to keep your engine running, and I frantically have to try and revive you on the way to work. I'm sorry it has to be this way, but we've been together for 7 years and I think it's time we moved on.

I am officially a K-2 special education teacher at Scotlandville Elementary. I am a bee. I am trying to cram 4 years of education training into one summer, so bear with the scarce bloggeture. I want to go to bed right now, and yes, it is only 9:25. On Monday, I went to bed at 8:30pm.

David's birthday is tomorrow! Happy birthday, Hubby. Also a big happy birthday to my Daddy on the 17th. I love you dad!

We are coming home this weekend! I can't wait to see everyone. I miss you tons and need some friend time. We should arrive late Friday and we have to leave Sunday, but it's worth it.

Congratulations to Jessica, Brooks and and baby Brooks on your new baby boy! I can't wait to meet Luke.

Okay, I'm sorry. It's been a busy busy week. At the job fair on Thursday I had 5 interviews and basically got offered (or did get offered) 3 jobs. One of the jobs I got offered, I have decided to take. I emailed the principal this weekend to let her know, but haven't heard back yet. It is a lower elementary (1st and 2nd grade) self-contained room. I spent all weekend working on lesson plans, cleaning and sleeping. David and I watched the Strangers on Saturday night. I have NEVER screamed so much during a movie before. Most terrifying movie ever....hands down. Despite being so scared, we actually had a lot of fun. People in the audience kept shouting things like "You gonna die" or "Put shoes on!". Other than that, not much to report. David is busy slaving away making crates to hold art for dolla' bills, and playing super mario galaxy for no dolla' bills. I lost NO weight this week despite trying very hard and being good (except for one day, our friend grilled out ribs, okay). I swear I ate a salad every day last week.

The dog park opened today....WOOT

The Raising Canes dog park opened this weekend. We had a blast with the Kabillion dogs that showed up. Raising Cane's is a resturant that only serves French fries and chicken fingers. It is also incredibly addictive. Since David and I seem to have a ticket to get on the fat train we had to avoid the free chicken strips and lemonade. We got these gift bags and they had what appeared to be a cookie. It has chocolate on it, so I figured it was a people cookie. Upon taking a bite out of one, I discovered that it was a dog biscuit, but it tasted like a cookie, just a really hard cookie. That's right, I took a bite out of a dog biscuit. I've really got to get my sweet tooth under control.

My first week of school

Okay....I'm aloud to breath now. My first week of summer school was pretty hectic. I might as well be back in school, and I should come to terms with the fact that I will probably be in school forever. My schedule so far starts with summer school at 7:30, teacher training from 2:30 until 4:30 and then usually studying, doing homework, making lesson plans, and reading teacher stuff until about 11. I came home yesterday afternoon and slept for 2 hours. I like it; it's just a lot of stuff crammed into 5 weeks. I also need to begin counting my weight watcher points again.....boo. Teachers tend to have free donuts and cookies everywhere, which I totally succumb to.

That's right, I'm smart.

I got my Praxis scores today.....190 out of 200! When the telephone said my scores to the TBR ladies they went "WOOOOO!" Oh yeah, I get the Praxis recognition of excellence for high scores.

David's parents are coming into town today to have tons of Liziana fun. If it doesn't rain, I want to go on a swamp tour.

David and I called Ash on the phone yesterday to see about the chicken pox, and he said to David, and I quote "When I'm big, like 16, I want to be artisting all the time." He also asked if we had lions and crocodiles in Louisiana and wanted to know if I had grown the pumpkins that were in the pumpkin cookies I sent him.

Elizabeth broke her leg in 3 places, Ashur has the chicken pox even though he to the vaccine, and Christy had to go to the cruise emergency room and get hooked up to an IV b/c of back spasms. Good grief, it's only a matter of time, before everyone I know has some other weird health problem. Everyone unaffected, take vitamins, drink orange juice, avoid itchy kindergarteners and stay away from steep hills.

Peanuts

Okay, so we did it, we bought a wii. I couldn't hold out any longer. I know it's kind of a frivolous purchase, but we had a blast with it yesterday and should have for many days to come. This also is a very powerful incentive for coming to visit us.

In other news, I'm pretty sure I'm allergic to peanuts. I've been eating peanut butter a lot lately, and it's something I used to never eat. I kept getting these uber-stomach aches. I looked it up online and apparently your throat does not have to close up if you're allergic, you stomach might just beat you up from the inside. Peanuts are now on my no-no list. Except for the Charlie Brown ones.

I start teaching next Tuesday, wish me luck. Ashur has the chicken pox. My parents and Christy are in Venice. This made me super-happy on the way to work this morning, check it out you nay sayers:

I promised slides and here they are. David made these shovels. They are ceramic overlaid with lace. I most definitely cannot explain it like David can, but the shovel pieces are essentially about the death of the blue collar job, and the value of manual labor in America. The first piece is an over sized helmet in a school chair, which reminds me of a dunce cap. The second piece is a biomorphic form (don't ask). I think they are beautiful! (My favorite it the second shovel.)

Workin' for the weekend

After an extremely hectic Mother's Day at the flower shop, David and I decided to start a garden. Little did we know but an entire system of large, log-size tree roots were right under the spot we were digging. It took us all day, but here is our little vegetable garden. Since I've had such horrid luck with the containers, we'll see if this works. If it doesn't, I'm throwing in the towel. We had a good weekend and perfect weather. I work at the flower shop for another week and a half, and then on the 27th I start summer school. I know I can do it, but I'm still nervous. I feel like I hold all their little futures in my hands. I'll keep you posted.

I had a FABulous birthday. David and I ate sushi and he got me gray chucks, a green ceramic guinea pig and a green bracelet. Baby Christy graduated college and I talk to everyone at the party. We took the dogs for a long walk. We went over to our friend Ryan's house for BBQ in the afternoon. Ashur, Jed, and Isabella sang happy birthday to me over the phone. I told Ash I was a teacher now, and Joe said I should have seen the look of confusion on his face. He said "what is Uncle David?" I said "He's an artist." Ash said "oh.....good he can help me make a T-Rex." Oh the possibilities :). The day was capped off with a super fun Dance party at an art gallery. Bye Bye, Bunk, Hello Dobasch

We found someone to take Bunk. He's driving all the way from Slidell to get him. My mailman said Bunk was an expensive dog, like a 700 dollar dog. I would only want him cause he's lovable. He does have a small eating-things-you-don't-eat problem. He has eaten a cord to a fan, a cable, and an entire bandanna. I gave him a big big hug this morning and told him to be good because he'll be gone when I get home.

Everyone at work got me a balloon and a Chocolate Dobasch cake for my birthday. It's a special Louisiana cake with like 10 layers of frosting. (I know you're salivating, Cody). Christin also sent me a big bag of her famous watermelon cookies, which I almost ate all of with David yesterday. This American Life premerie was amazing. I love love love that show.

We've got three art openings this evening and then I've gotta get up and go to work in the morning. I hope everyone has a great weekend. 27 in the house!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Grief, Charlie Brown

This week has been marked with angry floral customers, several firetrucks, and a wild goose chase for the owners of Bunk. Lets just says it's only Wednesday, and I'm totally worn out.

A girl called me yesterday and claimed that she had lost Bunk over by our house. She gave me a lot of details and told me that his name was Kirby and gave me her address to bring him back. It turned out her house was really far from ours, but David and I forced Bunk in the car and drove out there. I end up at a house with six kids outside and a lady who is apparently their mother. She starts cussing us out telling us she didn't call about the dog and the kids keep trying to pet him while she keeps screaming "it's a pitbull don't touch it." Finally said girl comes out of the house sheepishly and admits that she lied, she just wanted a dog. Needless to say we ended up taking him home. We called the guy who wants him and are giving Bunk to him on Saturday.

Some leaves caught on fire behind our house Monday night. Rocky noticed it and started barking. The wind must have blew some of the ashes that still had embers in them into the leaves. It rained all day Sunday and we had a cookout on Saturday so I can't believe there were even any embers. It all ended well, but 4 firetrucks showed up at our house.

The craziness of Mother's Day flower ordering has began. I've gotta get back to it.

A Whole Mess of Trouble

I took the Praxis on Saturday and it was easy as pie. I don't get my scores until May 26th (the day before I start teaching) but I should be fine. A dog came to our house today and wouldn't leave. I left our gate open all day and he just stayed in our yard. Finally I brought him in and gave him a bath. He has no collar or tags and I looked all around for a lost poster. He's sweet but he drools like crazy. We called about a shelter, and the only place that can take him is Animal Services and because he's a pit, they will put him to sleep after one day. We made posters and we're trying to find his home. We CANNOT keep him. If there is any more testosterone in this house I might die. For now, we're calling him Bunk, because I can't keep calling him new dog. This week we're going to see This American Life at the movies on Thursday and have some art openings this weekend. Also, it's my B-day on Saturday; three years until the big 3-0.

So I've been studying hard for the Praxis. The last time I took a practice test I scored 27 points above what I need to to pass Louisiana standards. This not real recession is taking it's toll on the flower business. Despite the upcoming "Administrative Professionals Day" things are super slow. This whole gas, food, everything cost too much thing is getting on my nerves. Someone on NPR yesterday was talking about how we used to make things in this country, and now we just make and live off of debt......shiver... I think maybe he's right. To pass the slow work time, I think about American Idol, and how all the boys rocked last night, despite the potential doom of Mariah Carey week; I purchase things online like Nalgene bottles made from HDPE, b/c the other ones leak toxins into your water (I know, I've been drinking out of them, almost exclusively for like years, I had to throw them away and it was sad) and I look at your blogs and wish my office had windows. David's reviews went well, but that has not stopped him from completely obsessing about these ceramic shovels he's been working on. I'm really proud of him; he's been working like a busy bee. I've been eating lots of watermelon and trying to adopt a guinea pig and name him Ignatious. I think Kate Blanchett stole that name from me when she recently had a baby, b/c I've been planning to name my guinea pig that for like a month. Some place in Louisiana recently rescued 23 guinea pigs from euthanasia, so I'm trying to get one of those for my classroom. Some big-to-do artist is speaking at LSU today, but apparently people who have jobs cannot enjoy it because it starts at 5pm, so while David's at the lecture, I'm going to be at work, and then at home, watching some Buffy and kickin back with my doggie dog dogs.

This past weekend David and I went to a lot of fun art openings including one in New Olreans. We've had really great weather down here the last few days and it should continue into next week. This next weekend, after I get off work on Saturday, we are headed to the glorious Angola Prison Rodeo to watch the inmates get crazy. Fun times should be had.....only in Louisiana.

The side effects of marriage

Since David and I have been married and sleeping in the same bed, we have discovered that I have a little problem. I have a tendency, to shout, sing, and fight in my sleep.

About a week ago, David was reading a book and I shot up in bed (still asleep) and started swating at the air. I started yelling about how there were dandelions everywhere and scared the crap out of David. Last week, David came to bed and I was sound asleep. As he was getting under the covers I turned around, and ever so softly punched him in the center of his chest and laid back down. Last night is the grad finale. David says he woke up, to me "crazy eyed" attempting to put my hands around his neck and choke him. He started yelling "hey hey hey" and I woke up and thought he was crazy.

If anyone has any ideas on how to calm down my rouge, streetfighting sleep alter-ego, please let us know.

Growin up a storm

In honor of earth day on the 22nd, I wanted to share with you the little container garden I'm working on. I have to grow everything in containers, b/c if I don't, Rocky will dig it up. It's an unfortunate side effect of my dogs. So if you haven't heard, there is a decline in the bee population (possibly b/c of cell phones). Planting flowers and things can help the bees find things to pollinate, making food for everyone (can you hear the teacher voice?). We have started growing our own herbs, tomatoes and peppers to save money, help the bees, and give me something to do because I am bored. It's fun; you should start one too.

Last weekend I baked a lemon bundt cake in my new apron with my new bundt cake pan. I also gave David a mohawk. Things are pretty low key here. We watch a lot of movies. David has reviews this week for his semester's work, so wish him luck. I still am sans cellphone. I promise I'll be up and running in a few days.

RAZR rest in peace

In a rare bought of genius behavior, I washed my cell phone in my pants pocket. If you would like to get in contact with me, call David. Also, I have a lot of people's numbers, but I also lost a lot of numbers, so if you think I may have lost your phone number, or if I did, I will probably be contacting you on Myspace or Facebook to get your phone number back. It is amazing how not having a cell phone makes me feel completely lost. What time is it? oh right, my cellphone looks back at me with vacant, water filled eyes as if to say, I want to tell you what time it is, but you killed me. Boo. My dad got a new phone and kindly sent me his old phone so I'll be up and running in a couple of days, but for now, use email.

In other news, I totally panicked because I felt like I did so badly on the Praxis practice test that I bought another test, with a score key. The test has 120 questions. In the dry, I'm not stupid so I don't need to study for this test-run, I only got 77 questions right, which is a D. I freaked and started studying non-stop and then freaked again and bought another test. I found out that, even though I only got slightly over half of the questions right on my practice test, I still would have passed with flying colors, so I have nothing to worry about. (except that maybe everyone who passes only has to get half the questions right).

Day off in my swanky house

I'm off work today...woohoo. I spent most of the morning sleeping and then I took a Practice Praxis II test and kinda bombed it. The test is in a month, and I've kinda been studying, but now I need to kick it into high gear. Most of the questions I miss are the ones about actual teaching, not the subject material. Also, I have to say, some of the "right" answers are questionable. I'm sure I'll be fine, but trying to remember everything from k-5th grade and stuff I never learned about teaching is a little taxing.

We've got all of our wonderful new gifts ready to go in the house, and I must say, it looks a lot nicer. Everything is really great. Here are some pictures from the house.

During lunch I watched this ridiculous episode of Tyra where all the women had to wear their weight on their shirt. Basically the lesson was, some skinny people eat really unhealthy food and some fat people eat well and work out a lot. What a great, disheartening lesson for those of us who's houses are full of fruit and vegetables and an elliptical machine. I give up. I am jumping off the weight loss train and joining the curvy, healthy train. Forget going down a dress size, then I'd have to buy all new clothes anyway.

This weekend was fabulous. Not only did we get to see Ben Nichols, have a wonderful reception thrown in our honor, receive fantastic gifts, but I also found out I got the job teaching special ed next year (if I pass the Praxis II). Things are looking up. I'm going to get the Henley's to send me some pictures b/c I was too busy keeping up appearances to take any myself. I had a great time, and I hope everyone else did as well. Thanks so much for your hospitatlity and the lovely gifts. Now it's back to the real world.

Easy to Please

Things are pretty great for the Devor/Carpenters these days. Yesterday, I got a Sam's card, which is awesome. I bought several bulk food items. There's just something about buying a flat of strawberries for 4 bucks that warms my heart. I came home and a board fell on my ankle, (which wasn't good) but then Santa Claus came (or the UPS guy). He brought me various Aveda Hair products I had ordered online and an AMAZING gift from Leah Billings. I cannot wait to dive into that dessert cookbook. I have come to terms with the fact that my Weight watchers goal is a little unrealistic when you like sugar as much as I do, and that's okay. After that, I got to hang out with my husband on the couch and watch TV. It was awesome.

Update on the name-changiness. I decided I was going to change my name to Chandle Devor Carpenter, and then I found out that in Louisiana you have to place an ad in the paper for 4 weeks letting everyone who reads the paper know that you changed your name. That is on my to-do list for sometime when I have time to deal with stupid laws.

We are headed to Little Rock for this fabulous shin-dig that the Henley's are throwing us on Friday. Ben Nichols is playing at Whitewater on Friday, so be there or be square. We hope to see everyone next weekend. Love ya,

Ain't no Party like my Nana's Tea Party

Hey everyone.

1st of All, a big birthday shout out to my Mama. I have no pictures, so I'm a lame daughter, but happy birthday anyway. You are the awesomest mom ever!

2nd, David and I rocked out to the Lucero show last night. It was great. I haven't seen them in a long time. We danced and sang and at about 1am I couldn't take it anymore. Ol' Granny had to go to bed. I just can't stay up as late as I used to.

3rd, I have been enjoying very much the TV we've been getting off of netflix. The Wire and Flight of the Conchords are both AWESOME. You should check it out. The Wire makes me happy we decided NOT to live in Baltimore and Flight of the Conchords makes me wish I were in a novelty band.

I have my big interview on Tuesday. I made a bunch of paper versions of breakfast food and we are going to feed them to a goat. It sounds weird, but it makes sense, I promise.

Bad News: I have gained 7 pounds this week for some unknown reason. (I promise I'm still doing weight watchers and I'm definitely not having a baby, in fact, that definitely, might be why I've gained weight.) Boo for eating raw vegetables constantly and gaining 7 pounds in 7 days. Dear body, please do not continue this catastrophe.

Student loans only get ONE forgiveness period, and I used that up after undergrad.

A very very, unhappy and sick woman yelled at me while crying on the phone for 20 minutes when I was at work because she didn't get items with her order that she never ordered. At the end of the conversation I felt so terrible, I thought maybe I should send her flowers.

Things have been good down in Liziana. I have an interview next week for the Teacher program. I have to teach a 5 minute lesson with a clear objective, for any subject K-12. I think I'm going to do a lesson on nutritious food for 1st grade. Any ideas from the crowd?

I got online today and applied for a coupon for a converter to bring my television up to speed. David and I can't afford cable so we have an antenna, which won't work next year. Plan A, B, C

Remember when I wanted to teach special ed and then I tried about 800 other career paths resulting in a comprehensive yet scattered, general resume? Well, I've applied for the Teach Baton Rouge alternative certification program and am taking the Praxis II in April for elementary special education. (If you have a Masters, you don't have to take Praxis I). If I do not get accepted (the deadline is March 3rd and I'm cutting it close), I will take the Praxis I and try to get an emergency placement in Special Ed for the fall, b/c it's such a high needs area and join a program later. After talking with several people, I found out that Special Ed. is such a high needs area, that if I took the Praxis I tomorrow, I could try and get a job next week for the current school year. Right now I'm still at the flower shop and help with the website by making up names for flower arrangments like "spring enchantment" and "Dashing daisies" but in the near future I should be working my tush off teaching in the BR school system. Things are lookin' up.

Well, I've been offered a full-time job at the florist. They want me to stay on permenantly. I'm signed on until Mothers Day if I take it and then I can look for a job in my field or stay on. It pays the bills and it's stress free. All I know is, I've been applying for jobs for a month, and have only had one interview. I also know that I've applied for almost 50 jobs and still no luck. I want to change the world, but a girls gotta eat (not to mention the sunfire is acting totally shady). I can always volunteer.

Well, last weekend Elizabeth and Jeremy came down for a visit and we had a blast and ate a lot of good Louisiana food. My interview went well last week, but I'm afraid the pay is too low, so I'm still looking diligently. I've applied to approximately 10 jobs this week, and have exhausted every single job search agent avaliable. When I'm done working at the flower shop, I'm putting on a suit and driving around my neighborhood to every single non-profit.

The work at the flower shop is fun. I get to read funny cards and smell roses all day. It's keeping me busy, but not too busy to cook. I made a really great quiche sunday and a tasty southwestern corn skillet dish yesterday. One things for sure, we are eating good, for now. David is lovin this whole married, wife cooking thing. I'm lovin finally having someone to cook for.

So I finished every single announcement today and went to mail the last batch. I asked for the stamps with the hearts on them, but all they had were the pollination stamps, one of which is a bat pollinating what looks like brussel sprout-cactus-daises. Hopefully you will be the lucky recipient of a bat stamp.

I'm currently working in a flower shop part time for Valentines day and I have a job interview for an Independent Living Specialist on Wednesday. Hooray for an interview! I'll keep you posted.

Rocky + Road = bad idea jeans

I got up bright and early to head to New Orleans on Sunday and met some great people in the disability field that gave me potential job leads. David remembered late that he had to go to work, so he couldn't go to the Dog parade. I was like, that's cool, I'll take the dogs, it'll be fine. Bad Idea, Chandle. Boomer, was cute in his little polo shirt and mardi-gras beads. Rocky, broke all his mardi gras beads from pulling and stepping on them as he proceeded to pull me all over the street with his mighty shoulders and knock people out of the way so he could get to other dogs. He also tried to pee on a baby stroller. After 20 minutes we were out of there and I needed a nap.

This week is pretty open for scheduling as I still don't have a job. I go to the grocery store every day to buy new ingredients for whatever crazy meal I plan on cooking that night. I've also been watching a lot of "The Wire" on dvd. Isabella is walking; Jed is using the potty, and Ashur lost his two front teeth. This weekend I'll be headed up to Siloam Extravaganza Wedding Celebration/ Superbowl fest and can't wait.

Brrr, Barks and Boo

So, I keep thinking, you really need to post, Chandle, but then I remember that I don't have much to say. Mostly, I look for jobs on ten different websites and cook and clean. I cooked three meals yesterday and made 2 chocolate pies from scratch.

I haven't gotten ANY callbacks yet on any of the 30 or so jobs I've applied for. I also can't seem to get people to call me back when I leave them voicemails. In lieu of this, I tried to make money taking surveys online and earned like 50 cents. I am also going to deliver flowers on Valentines Day. I might give Plasma, but I have those rollie-pollie veins. If all else fails, I will apply to work at a bookstore. I'm not ashamed. David is taking 18 hours so he's really busy.

Mardi Gras is coming up, but David and I will be headed to Siloam Springs for a reception thrown by my family on February 3rd from 2-4. I'm sure I'll have lots of pictures. I'm bringing a King Cake so stop by and hope to get the baby. This Saturday there is a Doggie Mardi Gras parade, be there or be square.

Mardi Gras is CRAZY, apparently there are like these krewes and clans of people who have been throwing balls for like a million years and they all get dressed up like crazy and have weird traditions like begging for a chicken and then chasing it around a yard for gumbo.

Louisiana is turning out to be way colder than expected. It doesn't help that our house has about 100 windows with a killer draft.

Oh what would I do without you, GPS. You help me find the grocery store, the post office, and all the various places I need to drop off job applications. I've been pretty busy for someone without a job, but most of it is just, buy a refrigerator, buy groceries, mail wedding announcements and thank you cards, clean clean clean. Our house looks great, David's busy with 15 graduate hours, and my full time job is finding a job. Basically, I'm a housewife. Tomorrow we're throwing a bbq at our new house and I'm making food, very domestic.

Rocky has taken to pooping in the far room every day, this must be stopped.

I got on David's sweet health insurance so I don't have to order sketch antibiotics from Thailand. Hurray for being a spouse.

Right now no one can get out of the Days inn parking lot, so a snow plow is coming. Hopefully we'll be home tonight, but I doubt it.
